沸石是沸石族礦物的總稱，是一種含水的堿金屬或堿土金屬的鋁硅酸礦物。具有吸附性、離子交換性、催化和耐酸耐熱等性能。沸石分為天然沸石和活化沸石。

      天然沸石是鋁硅酸鹽類礦物，外觀呈白色或磚紅色，屬弱酸性陽離子交換劑，經人工導入活性組分，使其具有新的離子交換或吸附能力，吸附容量也相應增大。主要用于中小型鍋爐用水的軟化處理，以除去水中的鈣、鎂離子，從而減少鍋爐內水垢的生成，減輕水測金屬的腐蝕，延長鍋爐的使用壽命。在廢水處理中，可用于除去水中的磷和鉛以及六價鉻。失效后的沸石可用于濃鹽水逆流再生后重復使用。 

      活化沸石是天然沸石經過多種特殊工藝活化而成，二氧化硅含量達68%，密度為0.75-1g/cm3 ，外觀為灰白色顆粒狀。沸石活化后孔隙率顯著增加，比表面積大幅提高，吸附能力成倍增加，可達到甚至超過活性炭的吸附值。而價格卻遠低于活性炭，是活性炭的理想替代品。

      天然沸石是一種新興材料，被廣泛應用于工業、農業、國防等領域，被用作離子交換劑、吸附分離劑、干燥劑、催化劑、水泥混合材料。

      1、在石油、化學工業中，用作石油煉制的催化裂化、氫化裂化和石油的化學異構化、重整、烷基化、歧化；氣、液凈化、分離和儲存劑；硬水軟化、海水淡化劑；特殊干燥劑（干燥空氣、氮、烴類等）。

     2、在輕工行業用于造紙、合成橡膠、塑料、樹脂、涂料充填劑和素質顏色等。  

     3、在國防、空間技術、超真空技術、開發能源、電子工業等方面，用作吸附分離劑和干燥劑。

     4、在建材工業中，用作水泥水硬性活性摻和料，燒制人工輕骨料，制作輕質高強度板材和磚。

     5、在農業上用作土壤改良劑，能起保肥、保水、防止病蟲害的作用。在禽畜業中，作飼料（豬、雞）的添加劑和除臭劑等，可促進牲口成長，提高小雞成活率。 

     6、在環境保護方面，用來處理廢氣、廢水，從廢水廢液中脫除或回收金屬離子，脫除廢水中放射性污染物。

     7、在醫學上沸石用于血液、尿中氮量的測定。沸石還被開發成為保健用品，用于抗衰老，去除體內積累的重金屬。

     8、在生產中沸石常用于砂糖的精制。

     9、在工程中，新型墻材（加氣混凝土砌塊）原料。

     10、在化學蒸餾或加熱實驗當中常用來防止暴沸，沸石的結構當中有大量的小孔，可作為氣泡的凝結核，使反應液平穩沸騰。可用敲碎至米粒大小的素燒瓷片代替。

     11、在水產養殖中可以用作魚蝦飼料添加劑，也可以做魚塘修建材料，凈化水質。

      活化沸石是天然沸石經過多種特殊工藝活化而成，其吸附性能比天然沸石更強，離子交換性能也更好，不僅能去除水中的濁度、色度、異味，而且對水中有害的重金屬，如：鉻、鎘、鎳、鋅、汞、鐵離子及有機物：酚、六六六**、三氮、氨氮、磷酸根離子等物質具有吸附交換作用，也有利于去除水中各種微污染物且水浸出液不含有毒，有害人體物質，去除水中鐵、氟效果更為顯著。因此活化沸石是工業給水、廢水處理及自來水過濾的新型理想濾料。
